So 2010 has come and gone. It was a year of many ups, but the downs were nearly as big – making it a somewhat balanced year I think. The purpose of this particular post is going to highlight what happened to me in 2010, so apologies in advance if this gets a little long.
Gaming wise, 2010 was a hugely successful year. 2010 saw the start of several campaigns, most of which are surviving into 2011. Perhaps the most memorable of these campaigns which will be continuing this year is my successful Doctor Who campaign which uses the very popular Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space rules published by Cubicle 7. This Doctor Who campaign started off small, with three players, grew to about seven at one point, and has settled on a very comfortable five consistent players. This campaign has brought about many memorable moments, most namely “The Shark” and “The Red Dalek”.
2010 also saw a couple of short lived campaigns: one which concluded, and one which kind of stagnated due to time conflicts. The campaign which concluded was a really fun romp using the hugely successful Dresden Files RPG produced by Evil Hat Productions. Based on the FATE System – DFRPG gives the tools necessary to run your own stories set in Jim Butcher’s very popular Dresden Files universe (for those unfamiliar with the series – think Buffy meets Philip Marlowe).
This campaign was my first real foray into what I call “player empowerment” systems. What I mean by this is that the players are given much more narrative control over the games – making for some very interesting and enjoyable sessions.
The second campaign was one that kind of fizzled – not from a lack of interest mind, but more from scheduling conflicts. This one is my Dragon Age RPG campaign – which was a LOT of fun, and a bit of a shame that it fizzled. I’m really hoping that I can pick this one up again this coming year – and all signs are pointing towards being able to.
